Generally speaking most museums tend to have the policy that employees should declare personal collections only when they tend to be what the museum collects, especially if it is for example an art curator who collects art as this could be seen as a conflict of interest. It is also suggested that if the employee comes across something they are interested in purchasing for personal collections that they notify the museum and give the museum the first opportunity to purchase or to decline the artifact.
