Kristy Miller sagely asks, "where will this lead next?" It seems that it has already lead to at least one junior high textbook publisher in Kansas pulling out the first chapter -- not of a biology text, but a history textbook. Gone is the discussion of the Bering Strait land bridge, the peopling of North America, and the Native Americans. Why? In response to the Kansas Board of Education's decision. I suspect that there will be more publishers of science and history texts who attempt to side step the issue by simply removing material. There are some excellent links that others in the museum community may be interested in visiting: www.informallearning.com/kansas/htm for an article by Robert Mac West, "What's Going on With Evolution?" www.nytimes.com/library/national/08299anti-creationism.edu.html for an August 29 article from the NY Times describing the National Center for Science Education as the David to the evangelical Christians' Goliath. www.natcenscied.com for information about the National Center for Science Education, the only national organization dedicated to the maintenance of evolution in the public schools. This site provides resources to educators, politicians, and scientists who are being challenged about evolution. www.national-academics.org/evolution from the National Academy of Science provides information about the importance of teaching evolution.
