Colonial Williamsburg and the Atlanta Historical Society both have systems
for displaying textile artifacts that diminishes the amount of light these
objects receive in their museum buildings. Colonial Williamsburg has a room
reserved for these objects where the light is only on when a visitor is in
the space. My memory is that the visitor can also pull out various textiles
for view on command, which means that they only get light when a visitor
requests seeing them.

In a relatively new exhibit in Atlanta when AAM was there for the annual
meeting I saw quilts on sliding panels in their exhibit space. The visitor
could push a button and the quilt would roll out for view.

I hope this helps,
Marian Ann

Does anyone display textiles (garments and accessories as well as
quilts,
etc.) in a visible collections storage type exhibit? Does a visitor
get to
see each textile or just an example with the rest of the items
stored away?
We are converting an exhibit space into a collections
storage/visible
collections storage-study center and would appreciate details from
anyone
who has this kind of arrangement. Thanks!
