Hello everyone, I am new to the list and have already gotten so much out of your discussions. I'm writing from a NFP org in NYC that administers and supports partnerships and collaborative projects between arts and culture orgs in the US and in Russia-- mainly St. Petersburg. We are embarking on a project to aid the Kunstkammer Museum in St. Pete to develop a museum store. If any of you are familiar with the Kunstkammera, you know how odd and unique it is! It's the oldest state museum in Russia founded in 1704 by Peter the Great. It houses the "anatomical curiosities" that Peter collected as well as rich exhibits in ethonography, archaelogy and anthropology from all over the world. We are bringing to the states a member of the senior staff of the Kunstkammer to visit small ethnographic museums with their own museum stores. We hope that through discussions with her colleagues here issues can be discussed around the production of objects and souvenirs based on ethnographic collections, store administration (is it closely related or separate to the museum's admin), whether it's a real source of income, etc. We also hope to identify institutions that might be intersted in entering into an exchange based relationship over a longer term with the Kunstkammer. Would anyone have any suggestions as to museums that should be visited by the Kunstkammer representative? Or perhaps you have some comments or issues around museum stores that we should be thinking about?
