Peter: Unfortunately this is necessary because of the need to have the List totally over-run with commercial (or worse) material - something that would happen within days if it became known as an easy touch. The alternative - which is used on e.g. ICOM-L or my own CHDEV-L (Cultural Heritage and Development ) is to have a List Manager authorising each posting - something that John Chadwick used to do on Museum-L also, until this became too much of a burden. At least with the present arrangement the chances of some spammer posting something offensive under your name is markedly reduced. I think that it is possible to set the LISTSERV software to eliminate the notification of successful distribution (see the MUSEUM-L FAQ file that we are all periodically asked to save for reference), but I find this quite useful as sometimes postings do get lost en route for various reasons.
