Position Available: Curator of Collections Sumter County Museum 122 North Washington St, P.O. Box 1456, Sumter, S. C. 29151 803-775-0908; 803-773-7796 The Sumter County Museum is seeking qualified candidates for the full- time position of Curator of Collections. This position is responsible for the acquisition, conservation, documentation and exhibition of the museum's collection of three dimensional artifacts. The position requires excellent skills in designing and producing temporary and long term exhibits as well as the solid research skills required to produce interpretive texts for the exhibits. The Curator will be required to participate in the interpretation of the museum's living history exhibit and in social and fundraising events held at the museum. The position requires excellent organizational skills, communications and writing skills, computer skills including of word processing and database programs, and a genuine interest in working with the museum team and the public. Preferred qualifications include a B.A. in American History or related field, an M.A. in Museum Studies and some museum experience. The salary is $20,800 per year with 2 weeks of paid vacation annually. Normal working hours for the position are Monday through Friday, 9:00 to 5:00; the position requires occasional evening and weekend hours. The Sumter County Museum is a complex of 13 historic and reconstructed buildings including the 1916 Williams-Brice House, the Carolina Backcountry Homestead which includes two c. 1812 buildings, and the 1917 Carnegie Public Library Building which houses the museum's Genealogical and Historical Research Center. The museum has a staff of 10 employees which serves the public 6 days per week. Annual visitation is around 10,000 per year and growing. The museum has an annual budget of $190,000 per year and a strong endowment. The museum is governed by a 20 member Board of Trustees and has two supporting organizations, the Friends of the Sumter County Museum and the Sumter County Museum Foundation.
