The Westport Maritime Museum has an immediate opening for a Washington Service Corps (Americorps) intern who will train and serve as Education Curator for a period of eleven months.  The intern will be responsible for upgrading and expanding the museum's K-12 and adult education programs, which are conducted at the museum and at Grays Harbor Lighthouse.  The intern will be expected both to conduct education programs and train and recruit volunteers to conduct education programs.
 
Minimum requirements are that an intern be a U.S. citizen, a high school graduate, and between the ages of 18 and 25.  Desirable qualifications are a bachelor's degree, experience in museum or public education programs, and computer literacy.
 
The internship carries a $740 per month stipend, health insurance for the period of the internship, child care subsidy for those qualifying, and a $4725 education award upon successful completion of the internship.  The internship is full-time, 40 hours per week, and will require some work on weekends.
 
The Westport Maritime Museum is operated by the Westport-South Beach Historical Society, a non-profit organization incorporated in the State of Washington.  The museum's mission is to preserve and interpret the history of the South Beach (that area of the Washington coast from Grays Harbor to Willapa Bay).  The museum is located at a former Coast Guard Lifeboat Station on the waterfront and operates a satellite facility two miles to the southwest at Grays Harbor Lighthouse.  Museum collections and exhibits related to life in a maritime community, life-saving and lighthouse history, oceanography, and sea mammals.  More information about the museum is available on the internet at http://www.westportwa.com/museum.
 
Westport is a small commercial and sport fishing port, population 2000.  Local facilities include a small library, medical clinic, dental clinic, grocery store, restaurants, shops and service stations.  Aberdeen, 20 miles to the east, is the nearest community with a hospital, chain stores, theaters, etc.  Olympia, Washington's state capital, is about 75 miles from Westport and the Seattle-Tacoma metropolitan area is about 2 1/2 hours drive.
