ITINERARY : MUSEUM MANAGEMENT COURSE MUSEUM COLLECTIONS MANAGEMENT COURSE (2 weeks). Frances Durocher, a Museum Contractor who has worked for the Bureau of Land Management, will be the instructor. Classes will be held at the Museo Regional de Ica, one of the finest small regional museums in Peru. It has an outstanding collection of ancient Peruvian textiles, beautiful ceramics and other interesting objects. American and Peruvian students will have hands-on experience working with collections from the museum while learning the basic conservation, documentation, and storage of museum collections. Grace Katterman will teach the textile component of the program This course is a terrific opportunity for museum volunteers, workers, museum studies students, or anyone who is interested in the behind the scenes collection management in a small museum. Classes include: Introduction Agents of Destruction Material types and their specific curatorial needs Thursday evening is Culture Night at the Museum. Weekend, June 5 - 6: Climb the dune, visit Huaca China, trip to Paracas. Week 2; June 7 - 11, Museum Management Course Emphasis will be on documentation and conservation of materials and continued work with the collections. There will be an added focus on textiles. CONDITIONS OF TRAVEL The California Institute for Peruvian Studies and Museo Regional de Ica are offering three courses of study at their field school in Ica, Peru during May, June and July of 1999. An add-on trip to the highlands is offered at the end of each course. CIPS is a non-profit scientific and educational organization and part or all of a participants costs may be tax-deductible. College credit can be arranged before departure at your expense through a professor at your institution. No previous experience is required, only the desire to participate in a scientific research project in conjunction with other U. S. and Peruvian team members. To be included in the trip, you must have a current passport and health insurance covering foreign travel (proof required). After reading the Conditions of Travel, fill out the Application Form and the Liability Release and return them with your deposit to the address below. These documents are also available on CIPS web site. You must be in good health and able to walk about a mile a day. Price of the trip includes: 2-3 nights in a Lima hotel, meals in Lima, museum tour in Lima, bus transportation to Ica and return to Lima (or to Nazca for the highland tour), meals and hotel in Ica during the course, course tuition, course syllabus, and basic course supplies. Not included: airline ticket to and from Peru, airport taxes, baggage insurance, personal excursions not listed in the itinerary, personal items such as phone calls, laundry, bottled water, room service or alcoholic beverages. CIPS agent will be happy to make the flight arrangements for you, or you can make your own arrangements and meet the group at the hotel in Lima for the museum tour and bus trip to Ica for the course. Participants arriving at the air port on flights arranged by CIPS, or near the time of arrival of the recommended flight, will be met at the airport by CIPS agent. Upon registration for a field course, you will be sent a list of suggested clothing and other item to take with you on the trip.
