Three free courses in collections management will be offered to Illinois museums in 1999. "From Mission to Marking" is a program of the Illinois Heritage Association, funded by a Professional Services Program grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services. The grant will support threes courses in 1999 and three courses in 2000. The courses will be scheduled on-site at the convenience of the recipient museums. Each course consists of twelve hours of study in five sessions. Topics include: physical plant, environmental conditions, hazards/security, storage materials/equipment, collections manual, handling objects, registration records/procedures, assigning numbers, assessing condition, and applying numbers. One session, for the museum's board of trustees, addresses ethics/trusteeship, purpose/mission, collection responsibilities, and developing policies. The courses are geared to small museums and will be tailored to fit the individual museum's needs. For an application form or more information, contact the Illinois Heritage Association.
