Clatsop County Historical Society 1999 Summer Internship Program Clatsop County Historical Society (CCHS) is pleased to announce its 1999 Summer Internship Program. CCHS will offer four internships to qualified graduate students in the fields of Historic Preservation, Landscape Architecture, Arts Administration, and Museum Studies. The Clatsop County Historical Society is located in Astoria, a town of 10,000 people situated at the mouth of the Columbia River on the northern coast of Oregon. Lewis & Clark’s Corps of Discovery ended their journey in Astoria at Fort Clatsop in 1805 and the town was settled in 1811. Astoria is rich with historic buildings in a variety of American architectural styles. CCHS administers three museums: the Captain George Flavel House, the Heritage Museum, and the Uppertown Firefighters Museum. The CCHS 1999 Summer Internship Program offers qualified graduate students a unique opportunity to gain professional experience in their field of study. Interns will work on exciting projects while developing new skills. Each intern will have a specific task which will be completed under the direction and guidance of CCHS staff. Internships will commence the first week in July 1999 and students will be required to work full-time (40 hours) for ten weeks. CCHS will provide housing at the Flavel property and will supply students with office space and the necessary equipment and conservation supplies. Each intern will be paid $1500 to cover their board and secondary expenses. At the completion of the internship the interns will present their completed projects to the Board of Directors, the membership, and interested community members at a reception given in their honor. Internship Projects Captain George Flavel Property (3 Interns) Through focused study of the Flavel Carriage House, House, and Grounds, summer interns will assist CCHS in the planning of the renovation of the Carriage House into an Orientation Center. The Flavel Carriage House was built in the Queen Anne style in 1887 and is a significant historic building. The Astoria newspaper recounts Captain George Flavel’s return from San Francisco in July of 1887 "with plans to build the finest Carriage House in the State". Projects at the Flavel Property include: (1.) researching the history of the Carriage House, the original configuration of the rooms, the original paint colors, recording modifications which have taken place, and assisting in the creation of a new plan for the use of the building; (2.) researching and documenting the historic use of the grounds and historic plantings and creating an overall plan for the landscape; and (3.) creating new interpretive materials for the Flavel House and identifying themes and outlining exhibits for the Carriage House and the orientation video. Svenson Blacksmith Shop (1 Intern) One intern will perform a collection needs assessment on the Svenson Blacksmith Shop. The Svenson Blacksmith Shop is a two story vernacular commercial building constructed in 1920. It was operated as a blacksmith shop from 1920 until Mr. Svenson’s death in 1967. Today the building survives intact and is an excellent example of an active blacksmith shop with tools and machinery in the same location that Mr. Svenson left them. In addition to the blacksmith shop, a Socialist reading room, assembled by the family for Socialist Labor Party members, is located at street level. The blacksmith shop and the Socialist reading room offers a rare opportunity for an intern to record, inventory, and condition assess an incredible resource of historic materials. Intern Qualifications: Knowledge and interest in historic preservation, history, and the museum fields. Good organizational and communication skills and the ability to work independently. Applicants should send a cover letter which indicates interest in one of the above projects and which outlines related past work experiences and coursework, a resume, and a list of three references.
