Tamara; There is GREAT variation in the practices of museums offering travelling exhibitions. We have more than 135 partnerships with museums in different countries, mostly small museums and historical sites and mostly in Canada. We believe that one of the functions of an allegedly national museum is to extend a helping hand to other institutions. ONE of the ways in which we have begun to do this is to develop a series of small travelling exhibitions, which we offer to our partners. From a standing start a year ago, we will have 7 such exhibitions on the road by the fall. The only cost to borrowing institutions is the insurance and shipping charge, both ways, and as most such exhibitions are small and primarily two-dimensional, this isn't much. Where several museums in a certain area get together to pass one of our exhibitions from one to the other, costs are reduced considerably. We do not intend that these will ever pay for themselves. We see it as a service we should be providing.
