Hello -

I am trying to find some information on a particular sculpture by Constantin
Meunier called the "Hammerer" or in some places, "Hammersmith". Meunier is a
late 19th c. - early 20th c. Belgian sculptor. This sculpture is in the form
of standing male figure dressed in some sort metal working outfit and helmet
and holding an interesting looking tool, also used for some sort of metal
working. This figure was made in bronze and plaster.

I am trying to find out the following, with not not much luck so far:

What exactly does a "hammerer" do?
Where does hammering fit in the manufacturing process?
Is he an iron or steel worker?
What is that implement called that he is holding?

If anybody knows anything about this sculpture or has a particular knowledge
re: early 19th and turn of the century metal working, or where I could find
this information, you can e-mail me directly. Thank you for your assistance.
