The Archeology & Ethnography Program of the National Park Service (NPS) invites you to submit a 1999 Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) grant application. NAGPRA became law on November 16, 1990. The Act addresses the rights of lineal descendants, Indian tribes, Alaska Native villages and corporations, and Native Hawaiian organizations to certain Native American human remains and cultural items with which they are affiliated. Section 10 of the statute authorizes the Secretary of the Interior to make grants to museums and to Indian tribes, Alaska Native villages and corporations, and Native Hawaiian organizations for the purposes of assisting in the inventory, documentation, and repatriation of Native American human remains and cultural items. Grants will be awarded in two categories: Documentation Awards and Repatriation Awards. Documentation Awards can range from $5,000 to $75,000. Repatriation Awards may vary up to $15,000. Application deadlines are as follows: NAGPRA GRANTS FOR MUSEUMS: Documentation Awards -- applications must be postmarked by DECEMBER 4, 1998. Repatriation Awards -- applications will be considered as they are submitted. There is no specific deadline. NAGPRA GRANTS FOR INDIAN TRIBES, ALASKA NATIVE VILLAGES AND CORPORATIONS, AND NATIVE HAWAIIAN ORGANIZATIONS: Documentation Awards -- applications must be postmarked by NOVEMBER 20, 1998.
