The Oklahoma Historical
Society is seeking a museum director for the Oklahoma Museum of History to
provide leadership for the planning, development and operation of the museum in
the recently funded History Center. The director will be responsible for
recruiting, hiring, training and supervising museum staff of 35 full-time state
employees. Be responsible for coordinating the packing and overseeing the
moving of approximately 500,000 artifacts. Work with architect and
construction supervisor to insure new History Center includes appropriate
exhibit/storage space. Oversee script development, artifact selection, and
exhibit production contracts for 32,000 sq. ft. of exhibition space with a total
development cost of $7.2 million. Develop long- range plans and provide
fiscal management. Oversee educational programs and special
events. Develop community based fund-raising and revenue generating
programs. Build and administer a volunteer program. Prefer
candidates with interest in Oklahoma history and thorough knowledge of the
principles, practices and procedures used in large museums or historical
organization administration. Knowledge of methods, techniques of
preservation, museum practices, including collections management and
conservation. Proven skills in establishing and maintaining effective
working relationship with non-profit Boards, subordinates, et al. Position
requires minimum of a master’s degree in history, museum studies, or a
closely related field and (5) years experience in a large museum or historical
organization, (3) years of which must have been in an administrative supervisory
capacity.
Salary range: $45,000 - $55,000.
