This continuously updated newsletter lists grants, fellowships, internships and study abroad opportunities for graduate students in art history and closely related areas such as humanities and visual art studies. It also carries listings of art history conferences and publication opportunities of particular interest to graduate students. Some listings are also open to undergraduates or to postdocs. See the Index to find all of these.

These descriptions have been cheerfully cribbed from the official announcements. When available, links have been made to the program site. Many of these web sites are also under construction; visit again in a few days if you can't find what you want. If there is no link, please write or call the program for full information.

AMERICAN ANTIQUARIAN SOCIETY

AMERICAN NUMISMATIC SOCIETY

GRADUATE FELLOWSHIP For a student in the humanities or social sciences who will have completed the general examinations for the doctorate, who will be writing a dissertation on a topic in which the use of numismatic evidence plays a significant role, and who has attended one of the AMS's graduate seminars prior to the time of application. Stipend is $3,500. The Council reserves the right to waive any of the listed requirements.

GRADUATE SEMINAR To be held at the Museum of the ANS from June 16 through August 15, 1998. The purpose of the Seminar is to familiarize students with numismatic methodology and scholarship and to provide them with a deeper understanding of the contributions made by numismatics to other fields of study. Applications are accepted from student of demonstrated competence who will have completed at least one year of graduate work in classical studies, history, art, history [etc]. Stipends of $2,000 are available to qualified applicants who are citizens or permanent residents of the US or who are affiliated with colleges and universities in the US and Canada. FELLOWSHIP IN ROMAN STUDIES A fellowship of up to $5,000 is available to use the collections and the library of the ANS in connection with studies of the Roman world. The fellowship is intended to support extended residence in New Yorka nd work in the Society's cabinet any and to permit consultation with relevant staff in support of a substantive research project. Preference will be given to those seeking advanced degrees.

FRANCES M. SCHWARTZ FELLOWSHIP To support the work and study of numismatic and museum methodology at the ANS. Applicants must have the B.A. or equivalent; the stipend will vary with the term of tenure, but will not exceed $2,000.

THE DONALD GROVES FUND Seeks to promote publication in the field of early American numismatics. Funding is available for travel and other expenses in associaiton with research as well as for publication costs.

AMERICAN RESEARCH CENTER IN EGYPT

ARCE has available fellowships for pre-doctoral students from a number of sources:

THE UNITED STATES INFORMATION AGENCY funding for pre- and post-doctoral scholars for a minimum stay in Egypt of three months. THE FORD FOUNDATION Offers five Development Fellowships for Egyptian pre-doctoral candidates enrolled in North American universities. WILLIAM P. McHUGH MEMORIAL FUND provides the McHugh Award, a special grant given to a graduate student from any nation to encourage the study of Egyptian geoarchaeology and prehistory. SAMUEL H. AMERICAN SOCIETY FOR HISPANIC ART HISTORICAL STUDIES: PHOTOGRAPHS GRANT

Open to doctoral candidates who are preparing dissertations on topics drawn from the history of Spain and Portuguese art [sic]. Each grant will provide up to $500 for the acquisition of photographs (and, when appropriate, reproduction rights) to illustrate the dissertation. To apply, send a CV, an abstract of circa 500 words on your dissertation topic, a budget with the approximate number of photos needed and their sources, and one letter of recommendation. MUSEUM EDUCATION GRADUATE FELLOWSHIP A one-year for 1997/98 academic year, funded by the Women's Board of the Art Institute of Chicago. CHARLES E. PETERSON RESEARCH FELLOWSHIPS FOR THE STUDY OF EARLY AMERICAN ARCHITECTURE AND BUILDING TECHNOLOGY TO 1860 Summer internships for periods of two to four months are awarded to graduate students enrolled full-time in an architecture or preservation program and carry a stipend of $1,250 per month. AMON CARTER MUSEUM: THE DAVIDSON FAMILY FELLOWSHIP

"The Amon Carter Museum is pleased to announce the Davidson Family Fellowship Program, funded by the Davidson Family Charitable Foundation, for scholars working at the pre-or post doctoral level. One candidate will be selected to initiate new research or continue work on an existing topic in American art that draws on the Museum's outstanding collections of paintings, sculpture, works on paper, and photographs. The program is designed to provide scholars access to the Museum's collections for object-oriented research. This fellowship is not intended to directly support thesis or dissertation preparation but should be considered an independent study program that reflects the candidate's major interest and builds on previously demonstrated proficiency.

The fellowship stipend is $3,500 for a minimum four-week period of full-time research at the Amon Carter Museum for appointments beginning on or after June 1, 1998. THE JOHN NICHOLAS BROWN CENTER FOR THE STUDY OF AMERICAN CIVILIZATION

Research Fellowship Program, Brown University, Providence, RI

The John Nicholas Brown Center is now accepting applications for its Research Fellowship Program. We support scholarship (research and writing) in American topics, primarily in the fields of Art History, History, Literature, and American Studies. Preference is given to scholars working with Rhode Island materials or requiring access to New England resources. Open to advanced graduate students, junior or senior faculty, independent scholars, and humanities professionals. We offer office space in the historic Nightingale-Brown House, access to Brown University resources, and a stipend of up to $2,000 for a term of residence between one and five months during one of our two award cycles each year: January through June; July through December. CENTER FOR THE HISTORY OF BUSINESS, TECHNOLOGY, AND SOCIETY

A cooperative program of short-term research fellowships for scholars interested in the historical and cultural relationships between economic life and the arts, including design, architecture, crafts, and the fine arts. COLLEGE ART ASSOCIATION PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT FELLOWSHIPS

FOR ARTISTS AND ART HISTORIANS For art historians of color and from other culturally diverse backgrounds who can demonstrate financial need and who will be in the final year of the Ph.D. program. PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT FELLOWSHIP IN AMERICAN ART Open to all PhD or terminal MA candidates in art history whose focus of study is on a topic in the history of the visual arts of the US and who will receive the degree in 1998. These are both 2-year programs:1st gives $5,000 for the final year of the academic program; 2nd covers placement in a professional position at institutions in parternship with the program. COOPER-HEWITT NATIONAL MUSEUM OF DESIGN, SMITHSONIAN INSTITUTION

PETER KRUEGER-CHRISTIE'S FELLOWSHIP FOR IN-DEPTH RESEARCH IN HISTORIC AND CONTEMPORARY DESIGN AND RELATED FIELDS Projects may be considered for future exhibition or publication. Fellow must hold the M.A. degree in a field related to decorative arts and design or art history. The Fellow is not required to be a doctoral candidate, and the Fellowship is not intended as support for doctoral research or thesis preparation. Stipend: a maximum of $15,000 for a maximum of 12 months and a maximum travel allowance of $2,000. DUMBARTON OAKS FELLOWSHIPS IN BYZANTINE STUDIES, PRE-COLUMBIAN STUDIES, AND LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE

Three relevant categories for graduate students: Junior Fellowships for ABDs who need to work on their dissertation or final project at D.O.; Summer Fellowships; and the Bliss Prize Fellowship in Byzantine Studies for a graduating college senior to support two years of graduate work in the Byzantine area. GETTY CENTER FOR THE HISTORY OF ART AND THE HUMANITIES

At this time there appear to be three types of fellowship programs open to graduate students: RESEARCH SUPPORT GRANTS to scholars and advanced students who are otherwise unaffiliated with the G.C. to pursue short-term research projects requiring the use of the unique resources held in the Center's collections. The amount of the stipend will vary. PRE- AND POST-DOCTORAL FELLOWSHIP GRANTS for up to five emerging scholars whose areas of research complement the programs and resources of the Getty Research Institute. Projects must relate to the theme of the scholar year to be eligible for a fellowship. No residential scholar program for 1997/98; theme for 1998/99 will be "Representing the Passions." HAAKON FELLOWSHIP IN ART HISTORY

Offered by the Meadows School of the Arts, Southern Methodist University. Provides $10,000 per year for two years; supports research and writing of the dissertation and a nine-month teaching residency in the Art History Department of SMU. HARVARD UNIVERSITY: HOUGHTON LIBRARY VISITING FELLOWSHIPS

Short-term fellowships are available to assist scholars who must travel to work with the Library's collections. Minimum residency period is one month between July and June. Stipend is $1,500. HENRY E. HUNTINGTON LIBRARY, ART COLLECTIONS, AND BOTANICAL GARDENS

Offers fellowships to support research in the history of British and American art. Awards will also be considered in areas of continental European art. Open to predoctoral as well as postdoctoral candidates. Applications accepted between October 1 and December 15 each year. THE STONEWALL JACKSON HOUSE

Graduate fellowships for summer study in American history, Museum Studies, Material Culture and Architectural History at Stonewall Jackson House. Candidates must be enrolled at the M.A. or Ph.D. level and must have completed at least two semesters of course work. Stipend: $3,000. HENRY LUCE FOUNDATION/ACLS DISSERTATION FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM IN AMERICAN ART

MASSACHUSETTS HISTORICAL SOCIETY

McKNIGHT DOCTORAL FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM

Provides an annual stipend of $11,000 and up to $5,000 per year in tuition and fees for African-American citizens to pursue a Ph.D. degree at one of eleven participating institutions in Florida. Special consideration will be givent o applicants interested in Art History, Art Education, Arts Management, History, or Literature. MEDIEVAL ACADEMY OF AMERICA

Does not seem to offer any fellowhips to graduate students, but they do have a fellowship list of medieval interest on their web site

ANDREW W. MELLON FELLOWSHIPS IN HUMANISTIC STUDIES

80 entry-level, one-year portable merit fellowships will be awarded in the 1999 competition. Winners of Mellon Fellowships may take their awards to any accredited graduate school of arts and sciences in the U.S. and Canada. Please note that funding is for only the first year of study in a PhD program. Each candidate is expected to apply to graduate school...for admission to a program leading not only to the M.A. but also program to the Ph.D. The stipend...for the fall of 1999 will be $14,500 plus tuition and mandated fees. ANDREW W. MELLON FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM AT THE KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS VATICAN FILM LIBRARY AT SAINT LOUIS UNIVERSITY

The Vatican Film Library is a microfilmed collection of about 3/4 of the printed books and manuscriptes in Greek, Latin, and Western European vernacular languages owned by the Vatican Library; the collection also contains all of the Arabic, Ethiopic and Hebrew manuscripts. The Fellowship Program is open to graduate students formally admitted to PhD candidacy and working on dissertations. The program is designed to provide travel expenses and a reasonable per diem to researchers with well-defined projects at the VFL for periods from two full weeks to eight full weeks. Projects can only be scheduled within one of the following periods: January 15 to May 15, June 1 to July 31, September 1 to December 22. Write: Andrew W. THE METROPOLITAN MUSEUM OF ART

NATIONAL GALLERY OF ART PREDOCTORAL FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM

Nine fellowships to support doctoral research. Application for these fellowships may be made only through the chair of your graduate department of art history "and other appropriate departments" Their web site offers full information; the basics are here:

David E. Finley Fellowship: $16,000 annually for 36 months, usually a two-year period for travel and research in Europe on a well-advanced dissertation in Western art and an additional year in residence at the National Gallery of Art, CASVA, for its completion.

Paul Mellon Fellowship: $16,000 annually for 36 months, usually distributed as cited above.

Mary Davis Fellowship: $13,000 annually, plus a $3,000 housing allowance for 24 months, to be held partly in residence at the NGA, CASVA and partly in the US or abroad.

Wyeth Fellowship: $16,000 annually for 24 months for research in American Art, partly in the US or abroad and partly at the NGA, CASVA.

Ittleson Fellowship: $16,000 annually for 24 months, for research in areas other than Western art.

Andrew W. Mellon Fellowship: $16,000 annually for 24 months for research in areas other than Western art.

Robert H. and Clarice Smith Fellowship: $16,000 for 12 months for research in Dutch or Flemish art intended for the advancement or completion either of a doctoral dissertation or of a resulting publication.

Chester Dale Fellowships: Two fellowships of $16,000 each for 12 months, intended for the advancement or completion of a doctoral dissertation in Western art.

NATIONAL GALLERY OF ART GRADUATE LECTURING FELLOWSHIPS

Two fellows will be selected for the academic year to deliver a series of gallery talks on the permanent collection and special exhibitions. Fellows receive a stipend of $3,000 plus a travel allowance of $200. Contact: Intern Coordinator, Office of Academic Programs, National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C. 20565. THE NATIONAL MUSEUM OF AMERICAN ART AND ITS RENWICK GALLERY

They have several fellowships available for graduate students (and also apply to postdocs and senior scholars). For the Frost, Schwartz, and Roby Fellowships, the terms are: one year, $15,000 stipend plus research and travel allowences. Time can be shorter; stipend will be prorated.

Patricia and Phillip Frost Fellowship is offered to pursue research in American art and visual culture. Topics that match the interests of the museum and its research staff are supported.

Sheila W. and Richard J. Schwartz Fellowship is offered to pursue research in American art and visual culture. Topics: same terms as above.

Sara Roby Fellowship in Twentieth Century American Realism is awarded to a scholar whose research topic matches the S. Roby Foundation's interest in American realism.

James Renwick Fellowships in American Craft are available for research in American crafts or decorative arts from the nineteenth century to the present. Rockefeller Humanities Fellowships in Latino Cultural Research are offered to study Latino art interpretation and representation while in residence at the NM of American or the Archives of American Art. THE NEWBERRY LIBRARY

Center for Renaissance Studies Fellowships. To participate in interdisciplinary and archival programs at the Newberry or Folger Institute for graduate students of the Center's 26 member institutions. CHARLOTTE W. NEWCOMBE FELLOWSHIPS

Offers grants to support the study of ethical and religious values in all areas of human endevor. Fellowships provide a stipend of $14,000 to cover living expenses for the final 12-month year of dissertation writing. Eligibility is limited to students enrolled in doctoral programs in the humanities and soical sciences at graduate schools in the US. THE MARY ISABEL SIBLEY FELLOWSHIP

Stipend of $20,000 awarded in alternate years for the study of Greek language, literature, history, or archaeology, or for the study of French language or literature. Candidates must be unmaried women between 25 and 35 years of age who have demonstrated their ability to carry on original research. 1998: French studies; 1999: Greek studies. THE SOCIETY OF ARCHITECTURAL HISTORIANS

SALLY KRESS TOMPKINS FELLOWSHIP Awarded each year jointly by the Society and the Historic American Building Survey of the National Park Service to allow an architectural history student to work as a summer intern on a HABS project. Stipend is $7,500. Deadline: January 13.

EDILIA AND FRANCOIS-AUGUSTE DE MONTEQUIN FELLOWSHIP Awarded each year in support of travel costs for research on Spanish, Portuguese, or Ibero-American architecture. Intended for graduate students and junior scholars. Award: $1,000. Deadline: December 15.

PAUL AND DAISY SOROS FELLOWSHIPS FOR NEW AMERICANS

For graduate study in the professions and academic disciplines at any institution of higher education in the United States. The Fellowships are for up to two years, with a third year possible at the discretion of the Program. Each year the Fellow receives a maintenance grant of $20,000 and a tuition grant of one-half of the cost of the US graduate program.

Eligibility: A New American is a person who holds a Green Card, or is already a naturalized citizen, or a child of two naturalized citizen parents. Individuals completing or already holding their bachelor's degrees or enrolled in a graduate program are eligible. A candidate must be between 20 and 28 years of age

Selection process: Candidates submit essays, transcripts and recommendations available by mail or at http://www.pdsoros.org [linked above]. From those who apply, finalists will be selected and invited to interviews. The interview panel will include educators and distinguished New Americans. UNITED STATES CAPITOL HISTORICAL SOCIETY FELLOWSHIP

Supports research on the art and architecture of the Capitol. Proposals for the fellowship year starting in Sept. 1998 must be postmarked by February 15, 1998. Stipend is $1,500 per month. WALTERS ART GALLERY MUSEUM FELLOWSHIP

The Carol Bates Fellowship for September 1998 to June 1999. This privately funded fellowship provides a stipend of $15,000 plus benefits. The Walters seeks applications from graduate students in art history who are interested in pursuing a museum career in the U.S. Applicants should have completed the M.A. degree and be enrolled in a PhD progam at the time of application.

The Fellow will work in the curatorial division on research projects related to the permanent collection and special exhibitions. Students in the fields of manuscripts, eighteenth century, nineteenth century, and Asian art are particularly encouraged to apply. Specific projects will be developed in collaboration with the relevant curator. The Fellow will also be expected to present talks for the museum's Education Division.
