Dear Mr. Fields: Your message was forwarded to me from someone in the newsgroup. At Fort McHenry in Baltimore, Maryland we have over 60 historic flags stored in a museum collection facility. Some are as large as 42' x 30'. When placed in storage, we roll the flag on large acid free tubes, then cover the flag fabric with muslin as an outer protector. We hang the tubes on racks, similar to what you might see in a fabric store. Our racks are suspended from the ceiling to make optimum use of available storage space. Flags can be displayed partially on the tube and partially flat. The fabric needs to be supported to avoid pulling or stress from its own weight. Avoid alot of exposure to direct sunlight and dirt particles. Placing the flag in a large case with a filtered plexi or glass front would be ideal, but sometimes impractical.
