Director: The Turks and Caicos National Museum
The Museum:   A private institution founded in 1991 as a history and natural history museum,  among the collections are archaeological artefacts recovered from land and underwater sites. Facilities consist of a restored historic house with professionally installed exhibitions, and a new building containing an archaeological laboratory, office/library, classroom, complete exhibition fabrication shop, and climate controlled storage. The Museum also developed and administers a modest adjacent arboretum. Future plans call for a branch museum, further archaeological investigation, and ongoing research. A website is in preparation. The Museum's newsletter appears as a discrete section of the internationally distributed magazine of the Islands.
The position:  Duties of the director include budget planning and oversight; supervision of two staff plus volunteers, collections management; exhibition development and maintenance; fundraising and membership development; research; and volunteer and educational program development. Director reports to Chair, Board of Trustees. Hands-on experience obviously is desirable.
Compensation: Salary of $40-45,000 US, tax-free, two bedroom bungalow overlooking the sea supplied rent-free, vehicle and vehicle maintenance except for gasoline. Moving costs paid. No pension or health insurance.
Qualifications:  At least three years of responsible museum experience, organisational and diplomatic skills, a minimum of an M.A. in History, Museum Studies, Anthropology, Archaeology, or related field.
The Turks and Caicos Islands:  A British Overseas Territory at the southern end of the Bahamas archipelago consisting of eight inhabited islands with a total permanent population of about 15,000. Formerly salt (not sugar) producing islands for 300 years, the Islands have a dry, sunny, breezy, uniform, and healthy climate and an informal social atmosphere. The Museum is located on Grand Turk, the Islands' capital, population about 3500. A branch is planned eventually on Providenciales, the tourist centre. Grand Turk has direct air service to Fort Lauderdale, and to Miami via Providenciales. A hospital is located on Grand Turk.
Details:  This recruitment is conducted by the first director, completing two years, who is leaving for family reasons. This is a contractual position, but intended to select a long-term director. The intent is to select and orient a replacement before the incumbent leaves. Applicants who do not meet the minimum stated qualifications should not apply.
