The Biodiversity Group at the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia offers an opportunity to learn about and work with its natural history collections, comprising 20 million specimens of plants, animals, and fossils. This internship position is particularly suitable for an individual who is considering a career in organismal biology or the museum profession. The position is full-time for 12 months. Approximately 2 days per week will be in Publications and Administration; 3 days per week will be devoted to various activities and projects in different departments and collections. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: For the collections: Projects/tasks may include, but are not limited to, assisting with computerization and organization of specimen collections and their databases; preparing specimens (e.g. making bird skins); cataloging specimens; simple conservation tasks (wrapping skulls, lining drawers, making new labels, adding alcohol to jars); washing glassware; preparing and sending material on loan; measuring specimens; map work; filing reprints, slides, and maps; scanning material for digital imaging projects; pinning insects. For Publications and administration: Maintain databases for subscribers to different Academy scientific publications; invoice subscribers, record payments, process orders, deposit proceeds; work with library staff to maintain publication exchange program; prepare mailing labels for printer; manage correspondence and telephone. General clerical tasks, including filing, copying, mailings, scheduling, etc. QUALIFICATIONS: B.S./B.A. in Biology; interest in one or more of the plant/animal groups represented in the Academy's collections or in museum management; ability to work independently and see tasks through to completion; willingness to undertake a wide variety of tasks and to learn new skills; ability to work compatibly with many different individuals; flexibility; detail-oriented; some experience with databases (Access; Paradox) and word processing (Word; WordPerfect); knowledge of simple bookkeeping; cordial phone manner.
