As a software developer we have found that there are 3 areas of ownership or
copyright.
1. The developer can relinquish the copyright to the client.
2.  The developer can license the software to the client
3. or joint ownership.

The most important, All contractual agreements should be spelled out in the
very first meeting.

We, as a developer, prefer # 3 with certain proprietory rights for the
client, as most software is created from a base of other software in place
and MUST be maintained.
