Alan-
As a museum studies student, I conducted an internship in Glasgow,
Scotland that was very well-suited to my interests and needs. When I
arrived, the Director of Education invited me to a meeting where I met
staff members and became acquainted with current departmental projects.
On my second visit, I was assigned a personal chauffer from the
education staff to show me first-hand some of the projects that were
dicussed. Then, I met again with the Director of Education to give her
feedback on which of the projects best fit my interests, skills, and
needs. Finally, I met with the staff person in charge of the particular
chosen project and defined exactly how I would be involved and what I
would be expected to contribute. At that meeting, we outlined my entire
internship schedule which reflected my week-to-week work schedule,
meetings, deadlines, etc. This schedule was flexible, of course, but it
really gave me a firm understanding of my goals from the very beginning.

I hope this helps, and I am glad to see your concern for the intern's
experience and not just expecting free help!
