I am another veteran of internships. The two internships I did as an undergraduate helped steer me into the museum profession. Not only do internships provide the student with invaluable experience, but they also give one an opportunity to see just what kind of profession they are getting into. I believe there are a lot of "museum want-to-bes" out there who have some how been mislead into thinking that if they go into the museum profession, they will be working in collections and "handleing" all kinds of "neat stuff". Like all professions one does not really understand "the big picture" until they get some work experience. Unfortunately this sometimes creates disenchantment within the profession because someone may have not understood the range of responsibilities they would be asked to handle. Especially in today's economic climate. The institution also receives many benefits from their interns. I highly recommend them.
