Here's everything I know on the subject of Museum Law: The book called "Museum Law: A Guide for Officers, Directors, and Cousel" by Marilyn E. Phelan was published by Kalos Kapp Press in Evanston, IL in 1994. This publication is available through the AAM bookstore at (202) 289-1818. Marie Malaro, Director of the Museum Studies Program at George Washington University, has written: "A Legal Primer on Managing Museum Collections" (1985) "Museum Governance: Mission, Ethics, Policy" (1994) These two publications might also be available through AAM, but I'm certain that they are available through Smithsonian Institution Press at (800) 782-4612. Also, there are many cities in the US which have Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts organizations. I know that Washington (DC), New York, LA, San Fran, Chicago, Cleveland, Denver, etc. all have them. These organizations often offer very useful and inexpensive publications and workshops. For the most part, they are providing pro bono legal services to struggling artists and arts organizations, but they are also often interested in keeping the legal community up to date on pertinent issues to the museum field. The number for Washington (DC) Area Lawyers for the Arts is (202) 393-2826. If you are not in this area, they still might be able to point you in the right direction in your community. Also, Columbia Law School has a Center for Law and the Arts as well as a law journal "Law and the Arts." I don't know any specifics, but if it's a Columbia program, it must be good. The only phone number that I have for Columbia is their admissions number, but at least it's something: (212) 854-2674. Taking place here in Washington from March 20-22, the courses cover legal issues and problems facing directors, administrators, trustees, legal counsel, etc. For more info, call ALI at (800) CLE NEWS.
