Hello Museumlist friends! I would be delighted to speak to any of you who are interested in the design and implementation of capital campaigns, if I can be of assistance. I am Director of Development of the University of Virginia's Bayly Art Museum. We are now in year 3 of a major capital campaign, in which we are raising endowed funds for operations and acquisitions, and funds for a planned expansion. We are fortunate in that we can piggy-back on U.Va.'s largest ever capital campaign, and all that that entails. However, as I am a one-person shop here and do everything from membership renewals to calling on major gift prospects to securing gifts of art to planning special events to attracting corporate sponsors, I think I can offer some advice as to how it's done from the ground up. When I started here almost three years ago, the Museum was taking in an annual average of about $80,000 in gifts - in 1996 we took in more that $800,000, which puts us at about half our goal. We still have a long way to go, though, and I'd be happy to share my thoughts on our triumphs and defeats if any of you would find it helpful.
