I agree with Eric that an M.B.A. can be a very useful graduate degree for one entering the "business" side of museum work. UCLA has an outstanding program, and an excellent placement record. It's interesting to me how these grad programs have mirrored real life -- from the mid-1970s to the mid-80s, the emphasis was absolutely on management and finance, often rather theoretical more than practical. As time went on, though, the emphasis began to shift to emphasize marketing and fund raising. Now, I believe there are even academic degree programs in fund-raising -- something unheard of a short time ago. As all museum struggle to make their incomes match expense, a person who comes to their job with fund raising or marketing expertise is valuable, indeed! I suspect that might be true even on the academic side of operations -- curatorial, education... Anne Farrell
