Please, a word of caution to Museum-Lers that hinge artwork. Beva has its pros and cons, as does any conservation product. It cannot be used on every item. Although we think it has good long term stability, it has not existed as long as wheat and rice starch pastes (their aging properties are better known). Heat activation can damage heat sensitive materials such as photographs. Also, overheating can drive the adhesive into the paper and damage the paper. Please refer to conservation literature for information on hinging artworks. The AIC Book and Paper group has written a leaflet as well as a catalog that includes a variety of mounting techniques. There are no quick answers, every product you apply to an artwork could damage it. Helen Alten Field Services Director 2400 3rd Ave. S. Minneapolis, MN 55404 612 870-3120 [log in to unmask]
