Our Curator of Collections Research suggests that your local
National Guard unit is likely to have someone trained to
deal with live ammunition or munitions if you find them (the
ammunition, not the Guard) in your collections. We have
asked the local Police Department to remove and disarm
ammunition, and even had them unload an 1870s cannonball
once. The Guard or the police may need some fast talk to
preserve any part of the artifact, but human life and limb
should take precedence in our opinion. Get expert help -
the stuff is dangerous.
