In the Museum's Journal which came yesterday there was a position offered with a central London museum, a first-position, it must be said, but still requiring a degree, good computer skills, etc., and preferably with museum experience. Starting salary? A little over 11,000 UKP (that's around 17,000 USD) - and a season ticket into central London from the home counties (i.e. from somewhere where the house prices or rents are realistic) can set you back around 2,000 or 3,000 a year (3,000 to 4,600 USD). Here, the average starting salary for a graduate is 15,000 (23,000 USD). In the museum world, that's the bottom end of the second job, for someone with an MA or postgraduate professional training. It was only after working in museums for five years that I got paid more than an evening cleaner in a factory. -- Patricia Reynolds Keeper of Social History, Buckinghamshire County Museum, Museum Training Supervisor, Bletchley Park and Freelance Curator "It may look a bit messy now, but just you come back in 500 years." 16 Gibsons Green Heelands Milton Keynes MK13 7NH ENGLAND [log in to unmask]
