FABERGE IN AMERICA March 12, 1997 - May 11, 1997 Drawn from thirty-two American collections, public and private, this exhibition will include over 400 examples of the design genius of Peter Carl Faberge (1846-1920), court jeweler to the last two Russian czars, Alexander III and Nicholas II. Faberge developed the firm founded by his father into the most important source of luxury objects in Europe. Faberge made traditional jewelry and silverware, but is most famous for the exquisite enamelled and gem-encrusted eggs given by the czars at Easter to the Czarinas Maria and Alexandra. Faberge also created from hard stones, precious metals, enamel, and jewels an imaginative assortment of useful and decorative objects for the Russian court and fashionable people throughout the world. The success of the firm was sustained until the Russian Revolution of 1917. American collections of Faberge are the most important to be found anywhere. Chief among them is the Forbes Magazine Collection, but the museums of Cleveland, New Orleans, and Richmond also display important collections of Faberge formed by single individuals, including Cleveland's India Early Minshall. All are lending to this exhibition, which concludes its national tour here. Faberge in America has been organized by The Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco and made possible by Faberge Co. with additional support from the Chubb Group of Insurance Companies.
