I've been following this thread with interest and wanted to add another idea that made my internship possible. When institutions offer internships, it can make all the difference in the world to the internee if alternative compensations can be part of the package. When I took an internship with the Juneau-Douglas City Museum, they were able to provide me with a plane ticket to Juneau, and a place to live. The ticket was provided as a contribution by Alaska Airlines, and the housing was actually owned by the City of Juneau, but was only made available through the inquiries and persistance of Director Mary Pat Wyatt. Although I recieved no actual pay, these compensations made my stay feasible. Don't overlook them as ways of helping out those that will give your institution their energy and effort. Now I've gone from being one of the unpaid hordes to being one of the consultants that are grateful for acknowledgement in the exhibit credits. The recognition helps us stay alive to be able to provide our expertise to you when you need it next.
