Tim, Labels are not a good idea because they come off, especially on sherds. We use MicronPigma pens that have waterproof ink. Crow quills or dipping pens tend to splatter or smear (at least when I use them). The MicronPigma pens come in different nib sizes and are relatively inexpensive. After labeling, we then allow it time to dry and then brush on a thin layer of clear nail polish. With dark or burnt sherds we sometimes use a little white-out (PLEASE, NO FLAMES). The beauty of the pens we are using is that they write on any surface including bone and glazed ceramics. We are also using a similar pen, but I can't remeber the name of it right now. Both types of pens can be found at shops with either art supplies or drafting equipment.
