The Indiana Historical Society, a statewide private, nonprofit membership organization with headquarters in Indianapolis, has two internship opportunities available. The IHS's Local History Services department serves the needs of a wide variety of local historical organizations throughout the state by providing consultations, training opportunities, loaned resources (mostly publications), etc. The Local History Services Summer Assistant will be primarily engaged in assisting with the creation and maintenance of several computer databases vital to the work of the department. This is essentially a position requiring excellent clerical skills. Duties may include, but are not limited to: computer database entry tasks, small research and writing assignments, and assisting with workshop arrangements. Overnight travel may be required on rare occasions. Skills needed for this internship include familiarity with IBM or compatible computers and experience with the Microsoft software programs Word for Windows and Access. Ability to type accurately at a minimum of 35 words per minute from printed copy. Flexibility, honesty, reliability, ability to work alone for extended periods, and ability to write and communicate in a clear and concise manner. A valid driver's license and access to reliable vehicle is preferred. The Exhibitions Summer Assistant offers college and university students an opportunity to develop exhibit planning, conceptualization, design, evaluation, research, and installation skills while working at the IHS for its Exhibitions Department. Duties may include, but are not limited to: research, computer-aided design, installation, maintenance, repair, and preparation. Some packing, lifting, and moving of materials will be involved. Those applying for the internship should have completed course work or experience in any of the following: fine arts, graphic design, museum studies, history, education, computer technology (Macintosh), and writing. Ability to carry out routine and detailed work in a timely and accurate manner. Primarily, students need to be flexible, reliable, interested, and willing to learn. They will be called upon to work both with supervision and independently, to problem solve, and to think creatively. Preferably, candidates will have a valid driver's license and access to a reliable vehicle.
