We are chairing a session at CAA (1997) in New York and are especially interested in the participation of Native American artists. Please forward this message to any and all who might be interested in participating. *Call for papers* Session at the College Art Association 85th Annual Conference, New York, February 12-February 15, 1997 Visualizing History in Contemporary Native North American Art In this session, we will examine the representation of history in works by contemporary Native North American artists. These works serve to make visible histories that have been stolen or erased, and as a counter-discourse to the non-native periodization of Native American history as a narrative of post-contact decline and contemporary renascence. Such non-native accounts deny the on-going colonization of native peoples and lands in the present, and successful native strategies for resisting colonization. Papers are welcome which focus on Native North American artists working in any media. Interdisciplinary papers are especially welcome. Panelists should consider history in its broadest sense. Papers might explore issues such as history as an aspect of self-determination, the relationship of personal (autobiographical) history to tribal, national and global histories, or the commodification of Native American history. We welcome the participation of artists, art historians and scholars in related fields. Please include the following items when submitting proposal: (1) preliminary abstract of 1 to 2 double-spaced typed pages; (2) letter explaining interest and expertise in the topic; (3) c.v. with home and office addresses and telephone numbers; (4) completed session participation proposal form, located at end of the Call for Participation recently mailed to CAA members (if you are not a member skip this); (5) slides, videos or other documentation of work and a ssae for the return of same. ****DEADLINE for receipt of proposals: April 10, 1996**** send proposals to: Michelle Meyers and Jo Ann Woodsum Women's Studies Program Dartmouth College 2 Carpenter Hall H.B. 6038 Hanover, NH 03755 [log in to unmask] [log in to unmask]
