New Web Site Announcement: the Charleston Multimedia Project. The Charleston Multimedia Project is an online guide to the history, architecture, and culture of Charleston, SC. It is reached through the Home Page of the Charleston County Library at http://www.awod.com/ccl/ Founded in 1670 as the capital city of the Carolina Colony, Charleston has had a colorful, turbulent history. From the first major naval battle of the Revolution to the opening shots of the Civil War, it has embodied the American experience in a vibrant, visible way. An architectural showplace almost from its inception, Charleston has also been a national leader in historic preservation. The Project, funded by an Apple Libraries of Tomorrow Grant, is organized around four interlinked elements: Guidebook: a street-by-street guide to the Historic District linked to hundreds of digital images; Topics: a series of essays about the city's history and architecture; Timeline: a chronology from the 16th century to the present; and Tours: online visits to selected historic structures. The project is a collaborative effort with the Preservation Society of Charleston, Historic Charleston Foundation, and other local agencies.
