Ethnographic Collections Manager. The Peabody Museum of Archaeology And Ethnology seeks an Ethnographic Collections Manager working under the direction of the Associate Director, to be responsible for the maintenance, organization, storage of the ethnographic collections. Duties include providing curatorial information, documentation, access to and transport of, and loan of ethnographic artifacts to staff, faculty, visiting scholars, artists, students, and classes; organizing and maintaining storage facilities for ethnographic collections; scheduling and overseeing maintenance. Responsible for the security of the ethnographic storage facilities. Monitors artifact condition and environment in conjunction with conservator. Assists in the evaluation of loan and analysis requests for ethnographic materials. Responsible for cataloguing of collections newly accessioned by registrar. Responsible for backlog of cataloguing into museum database. Supervises non-exempt staff, work-study students, volunteers, and interns. Assists with exhibit research and preparation as required. Performs project work involved in reorganization of collections, surveys, documentation and reviews. Assists in proposal writing as required. Qualified individual must demonstrate general knowledge of world ethnographic cultures, artifact styles and materials; knowledge of archival research methods, historical documentation, etc. Knowledge of correct storage conditions for ethnographic collections. Knowledge of ethnographic materials in order to identify need for conservation. Position requires organizational skills for dealing with large complex collections and storage facilities; skills in training and supervising a diverse number of assistants; ability to communicate. Good writing skills. Familiarity with computer systems, especially museum database systems is desirable. Knowledge of Macintosh environment a plus. B.A. or M.A. in museum studies or socio-cultural anthropology or equivalent. Museum experience required. 28 hours a week: $25,600 with benefits. Hrdy Fellowship in North American Ethnography The Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology at Harvard University invites applications for a two year (renewable for a third) Hrdy Post-Doctoral Fellowship in North American Ethnography. Applicants must have a Ph.D. in socio-cultural anthropology with a specialization in the history and/or material culture of Native Americans. Fellows are expected to conduct and stimulate research into the Peabody's North American collections, when appropriate offer one course each year in the Department of Anthropology on a topic in North American ethnography, and serve as a research advisor to the Museum's Repatriation Unit.
