Its variable holdings also include an extensive collection of rare and first edition books, specialized serials, and a nationally renowned collection of museum quality, African American art by 19th and 20th century masters such as Henry Ossawa Tanner, Edward Mitchell Bannister, William E. Scott, Romare Bearden, Elizabeth Catlett, Lois Mailou Jones, Jacob Lawrence, and William H. Johnson. The Center is currently seeking venues for a travelling exhibition of its Toussaint L' Ouvertue Collection by Jacob Lawrence for the 1997-98 year. The rental fee is $5,000.00 per eight week period. The forty-one paintings in the Series is the artist's first historical narrative series. It is accompanied by three text panels, one which contains biographical information on the artist, another which provides information on the Series and its relationship to the Amistad Research Center's other Museum holdings, and the final panel will contain biographical information on Toussaint L' Ouverture. Borrowers are responsible for the shipping, transportation and insurance of the works. It is a high security exhibition and standard facility reports are required of all potential borrowing institutions. The Center also offers mini catalogs to accompany the exhibition. These catalogs which are a limited edition collector's item are now out-of-print. They are offered at the wholesale price of $15 each with purchases of one hundred or more. We will also offer an instructional package for teachers which includes a complete set of slides of the Series, 35 children's booklets which feature maps, images, and bibliographic references and one cassette tape for one hundred dollars each.
