[quoting Janice Klein, The Field Museum [log in to unmask]: Subj: Expert Advice A deep sigh... At the risk of being flamed, I need to support Diane Gutenkauf's postings about the use of expert advice.... end of quote] At the same risk, I add my support. In my field (history) you don't need a license to express an opinion, and it's stimulating to read and participate in debates on historical topics, on MUSEUM-L and elsewhere. Sometimes, however, requests appear on MUSEUM-L asking for specific factual historical information that someone needs as part of a program or exhibit. These requests are often answered with helpful references to experts, libraries, or particular written sources that can provide accurate answers. Unfortunately, these requests also tend to draw unfounded speculation and erroneous guesses from well-trained botanists, astronomers, and others who recall that they may have once read a book about the subject in question. These kinds of comments are no more helpful to the poster than would be my advice on wasp removal. Gutenkauf was accused of "condescension" for expressing the pain she felt watching amateurs spread misinformation. I feel your pain. Gerry Prokopowicz, Ph. D.
