"Risers" originated in stagecraft, and are merely raised platforms, easily built with lumberyard materials, skirted, carpeted, what have you. The idea is to create a subliminal, non-verbal pyschological barrier. I have also seen them with built-in pressure-sensitive alarm mechanisms, so that someone climbing aboard brings the guard on the run. According to Patricia W.
