Lakes Ships X-To: HISTORICAL ARCHAEOLOGY <[log in to unmask]> To: Multiple recipients of list HISTARCH <[log in to unmask]> Tom Langhorne has drawn me out of lurker mode. This response will be brief and incomplete, but may be of some help. First, Patrick Labadie of the Corps of Engineers Canal Park Museum in Duluth, MN, is the reigning expert on Upper Great Lakes shipping, in my book. He maintains an extensive database and has an incredible perspective based on significant research. Second, NPS Submerged Cultural Resources Unit did a monster study of Isle Royale NP shipwrecks that included a super background context prepared by Dan Lenihan, Toni Carrell and others. Unfortunately, printed in limited copies, but persistent rumors of a popular reprinting abound. Some libraries and individuals have copies, too. "Submerged Cultural Resources Study, Isle Royale National Park" Daniel J. Lenihan, Editor, Southwest Cultural Resources Center Professional Papers, Number 8, 1987, Santa Fe NM, USGPO 1987-775-488/65149. You might get it through NTIS??? Whitefish Point Museum is good, Ken Potts and John Halsey should be of help. Also, contact Kenneth Vrana, who's working with the Sea Grant Program at MSU, I think. I only have a home address for him: PO Box 4681, East Lansing, MI 48826. He did a PhD in Resource Management on submerged resources and has been instrumental in developing underwater preserves. Hope that these ramblings are of some use. It would be a good idea, Original Poster, to tell people just WHY you want such info. If you did, I missed it.
