Balboa Park Online Collaborative (BPOC) is hosting a free webinar called Dreaming of Building More Inclusive Art Collections on November 29th from 8 AM PT/11 AM ET to 9 AM PT/12 PM ET.

• Lia Newman, Director/Curator of the Van Every/Smith Galleries at Davidson College

• Courtney Uldrich, Collections Curator at the University Art Museum (UAM) at New Mexico State University (NMSU).

You’ll gain insights into the following topics:

• Only 4% of art across museums and galleries in the United States are from Black Women artists. TILA Studio’s #AboveFour Campaign seeks to change that. Its goal is to increase awareness and interest around Black Women’s participation and contributions in the Fine Art Industry. 

• Discover the curatorial opportunity within the community of Los Cruces, New Mexico. Learn how the University Art Museum at New Mexico State University brought a previously inaccessible collection of Mexican retablos online. You’ll hear how the Catholic iconography was connected to contemporary artists and how it spurred fundraising for the previously forgotten collection. 

• An undergraduate class at Davidson College researches its art collection to identify gaps and uses a fund and rubric to acquire new works. You’ll also hear how the Van/Every Smith Galleries at Davidson are making an effort to input more information about the artists back in their database. 

• Hear how Children’s Hospital Colorado exhibits artworks that reflect the people visiting and working within the hospital. Examples will be shared from exhibits that celebrate LGBQT, Hispanic Heritage and Black History. You’ll hear how they’ve collected feedback and are hearing positive testimonials about how visitors feel seen and included; how people wanted to spend more time with the artworks and stories.

• And throughout the presentation you’ll hear tips for tracking and sharing the demographics and backgrounds of your artists. You’ll discover easy-to-use CMS tools that help spread the culture, stories and experiences of your artists – creating connections with your audiences near and far.
