Hello everyone,

On behalf of the entire team, I would like to warmly invite you to join us this evening live from NYC via Zoom (7p ET / 4p PT) for our weekly free and interactive tour.

#134 Considering Art: Considering Monuments - featuring urgent work by François-Xavier Gbré.

François-Xavier Gbré's (he/him) studies of buildings and monuments are informed by the artist's shifting perspective of the landscapes he inhabits. Born to a French Ivorian family in Lille, Gbré witnessed his hometown's transition from a thriving industrial centre to a city in decline. As industry collapsed, seeing imposing buildings on the verge of ruin triggered the artist's early interest in documenting the transformation of the urban landscape.

After studying biochemistry, Gbré decided to move to Montpellier where he enrolled at the École Supérieure des Métiers Artistiques with hopes of pursuing a career in photography. While travelling around Europe and Africa as a commercial photographer, Gbré was sent to assist the American photographer Stephen Shore (1947-) on a fashion shoot. Often associated with new topographics, Shore was part of a generation of photographers interested in recording the impact of human intervention on the landscape. The encounter would leave an impression on Gbré, who embarked on a similar quest to record the architectural and industrial landscape of Africa, linking buildings to their wider social and political histories.

In this tour, we embark on some close looking.

Together we ask: What do you see?
