Hello everyone,
On behalf of the entire team, I would like to warmly invite you to join us this evening live from NYC via Zoom (7pm ET / 4pm PT) for our weekly free and interactive tour.
This week’s is: #101 Considering Art: Considering Selfhood - featuring work by Tschabalala Self.
Tschabalala Self (she/her) lives and works in the New York Tri-State. Tschabalala builds a singular style from the syncretic use of both painting and printmaking to explore ideas about the Black body.
Self writes “My current body of work is concerned with the iconographic significance of the Black female body in contemporary culture. My work explores the emotional, physical and psychological impact of the Black female body as icon, and is primarily devoted to examining the intersectionality of race, gender and sexuality. Collective fantasies surround the Black body, and have created a cultural niche in which exists our contemporary understanding of Black femininity. My practice is dedicated to naming this phenomenon."
In this tour, we embark on some close looking.
Together we ask: What do you see?
