Historical Interpreter


Historic Richmond Town seeks Historical Interpreters to provide mission-focused interactive experiences for school children and the visiting public. Historical Interpreters are responsible for connecting visitors’ hearts and minds to the historical significance of this site. Teaching programs that are interdisciplinary, bringing together history, art, science and technology, Historical Interpreters provide meaningful interpretation to our audience. Historical Interpreters have the unique privilege to help refocus the Education Department’s offerings to include stories of underrepresented peoples and cultures. Historic Richmond Town is New York City’s only living history village, comprising more than 30 historic buildings across 100 acres of park land.

Historical Interpreters breathe life into the Historic Richmond Town site. By teaching field trips, leading interpretive tours, and co-leading workshops and classes, Historical Interpreters fulfill the organization’s educational mission on the frontlines.  With an emphasis on hands-on, discovery-based learning, programs offer a wide range of activities within a mosaic of disciplines designed to educate, inform, and delight.Historical Interpreters will participate in training, wear costumes, teach in historic structures, and learn the basics of historic trades & skills. Historical Interpreters report to the Manager of  Education Programs.

The Historical Interpreter’s responsibilities include but are not limited to the ones outlined below:


  • Teach inquiry based programming about important events and periods in Staten Island and American history

  • Learn all programs by studying the provided program outlines, shadowing programs, co-teaching programs and teaching under observation.

  • Don clothing issued by SIHS to create a complete appearance transformation to accurately reflect time periods as assigned.

  • Learn and perform (demonstrate) a trade or craft

  • Communicate with SIHS administrative staff to ensure all programs are delivered in a timely fashion and meet expectations.

  • Attend regularly-scheduled on-site trainings to learn content and program formats.

  • Complete and submit all required paperwork including program evaluations, planning session sheets, and time-sheets.

  • Additional duties as requested may include but not be limited to leading teacher workshops, parent involvement programs, family programs, and special events.

  • Maintain visitor safety and safety of museum collection objects

  • Prepare buildings with education props for programs as requested.

  • Assist with answering visitor inquiries.

  • Assist with education tour programs.

  • Assist with organizing storage of program materials.


Qualifications

  • Interest in and curiosity about American history

  • Education and/or relevant museum education experience including teaching art

  • Driver’s license and car a plus

  • Customer service experience

  • A passion for education

  • An interest in living history

Manager of Education Programs


Historic Richmond Town is looking for a dynamic employee to fill the role of Manager of Education Programs. This role plays an integral part in the development and delivery of mission-based learning opportunities at the Historic Richmond Town campus and Decker Farm site. Educational programming is a core element of Historic Richmond Town’s mission, to interpret an inclusive history of humankind on Staten Island, and the Manger of Education Programs will steer the repositioning of the department’s focus.


Reporting directly to the Director of Education & Public Programs, the Manager of Education Program executes and evaluates all school programs, supervises and trains Historical Interpreters and education volunteers, and supports the implementation of strategies for program growth and scaling. Throughout the year, Historic Richmond Town hosts an array of hands-on field trips for visiting school groups, in addition to public facing programming, including living history events and the Summer Apprentice Program. The manager is key to efforts to include narratives of underrepresented populations into new and existing programming. This work is to be performed in concert with the organization’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion plan. Reporting to the Manager are part time Historical Interpreters.

The Manager of Education Programs’s responsibilities include but are not limited to those outlined below:


Program Administration

  • Works closely with the Director of Education & Public Programs to ideate, develop and deliver education and public programs.

  • Hire, train, manage and schedule Historical Interpreters.

  • Serve as primary contact for education program inquiries and booking, and oversee reservations. Foster relationships with touring companies, higher education, senior centers to increase visitorship.

  • Responsible for daily supervision of Historical Interpreters, filling in to lead programs as needed.

  • Act as program lead for Summer Apprentice Program, and support evening and weekend programs as needed.

  • Initiate school program audit, evaluating the effectiveness and operating procedure of field trips, and making adjustments in accordance with best practices in museum education.

  • Research and develop learning opportunities that amplify the diversity of human history on Staten Island.

  • Build capacity for programs catered to middle and high school students, seniors and atypical learners.

  • Cultivate relationships with schools, educators, teaching artists, and other partners as related to education programs.

  • Leads school programs & tours as a substitute as-needed.


Department Support

  • Coordinate supply orders, and assist the Director with maintaining program budgets.

  • Assist Director in providing program marketing and  communications content to the External Affairs team, including video editing.

  • Lend support to site wide events and programs, including Richmond County Fair (Labor Day Weekend). 

  • Represent Historic Richmond Town at meetings and symposia as needed, and participate in professional development opportunities.

  • Other duties as assigned.


Qualifications

  • Experience in museum education and knowledge of museum pedagogy

  • Knowledge of K-12 education, curriculum development and lesson planning

  • Knowledge of living history theory and practice

  • Demonstrated ability to take initiative and handle multiple tasks

  • Experience in a successful managerial role

  • Proficiency with Google Apps

Development Associate


We are seeking a team member to help Historic Richmond Town grow its fundraising capacity. The Development Associate is responsible for assisting all development daily operations and procedures, as well as supporting long-term goals of Historic Richmond Town’s Development department. The Associate demonstrates an understanding of fundraising for the arts and culture sector, and brings enthusiasm towards Historic Richmond Town’s mission. 


The Associate assists with the administrative activities within the Development department, and provides assistance for all sources of funding which include, but are not limited to: donations; memberships; grants; governmental funding; corporate contributions; planned giving; capital campaigns, and more. We are excited to grow the Development department with new team members. The Associate can look forward to collaboration within the department and inter-departmental collaboration, while working on projects and goals that increase Historic Richmond Town’s development opportunities. 


The Development Associate reports directly to the Development Officer. 


Historic Richmond Town is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization. Each year we receive funding from the City of New York, but we must raise the remaining funds to fulfill our mission and yearly budget. The Development Department ensures that all internal development operations are efficiently maintained, and all public-facing aspects of fundraising are clearly communicated to all constituencies. The Associate is an attentive team member who will serve our current funding sources, help to find new sources of funding, and grow our giving capacity.

Job Description

The Development Associate responsibilities include but are not limited to the ones outlined below:


Administrative

  • Provide support researching prospective grants, funders, and donors

  • Coordinating funding requests, reports and other documents

  • Preparing thank you and tax acknowledgement letters

  • Entering contributions into the donor database

  • Assisting with preparation of written materials including but not limited to newsletters, grant proposals, reports, fundraising content, etc.

  • Providing excellent customer service and communication 

  • Assisting with fundraising projects such as special events, member programs, and more

  • Processing membership transactions online, on the phone or in person at special events and fundraisers

  • Other duties as assigned by the Development Officer


General

  • Holds excellent attention to detail

  • High level proficiency with Microsoft Office and Google Suite

  • Familiarity with databases and/or donor management systems, DonorPerfect a plus

  • Understanding of nonprofit fundraising and cultural institutions

  • Demonstrate excellent organizational and writing skills 

  • Capable of working on multiple projects simultaneously


The Development Associate will receive training for department procedures, including database management, and overall organization procedures and protocols.


COVID-19 Protocols and Procedures

This position is currently a hybrid blend with shifts available on site and remotely, but will move towards completely on site over the summer.  This is subject to change as State and City protocols are lifted or changed. The Development Associate agrees to follow all protocols and procedures as indicated by the HRT COVID-19 Reopening Guide if they work on site. This includes wearing a protective face mask at all times during shift, submitting the HRT Health Check-in survey before arriving on site for all shifts, and anything else required. The protocols and procedures are subject to change to follow all City, State and Federal mandates.

Wage: $17 per hour

Shift: 20 hours per week ; occasional weekend and evenings shifts as needed throughout the year

Security & Operations Coordinator

 

Historic Richmond town is seeking new team members to join the Facilities Crew as the Security & Operations Coordinator. The Coordinator is responsible for cleaning and sanitizing offices, meeting rooms, restrooms, break rooms and all public areas of the site and providing security & customer service functions. They conduct routine patrols of the site, either on foot or in a patrol vehicle. The Coordinator performs access control functions to the facility and/or buildings. They also protect the organization’s property and personnel as per the site standard operating procedures. 


This position reports to the Facilities Manager.

Primary Responsibilities: 


Operations

  • Cleaning of office and public spaces

    • Vacuuming, sweeping, and mopping of flooring

    • Cleaning interiors of interior windows

    • Cleaning and sanitizing office spaces and all public areas

    • Picking of garbage across campus while on security patrols

  • Maintaining janitor closets and equipment in a clean, organized and safe manner

  • Restocking supplies in bathrooms, break rooms and common areas

  • Notifying the supervisor when reorder of supplies are needed

  • Emptying all trash cans and replacing liners, cleaning receptacles as necessary 

  • Proper labeling, dilution and use of all chemicals 

  • Wearing proper Personal Protective Equipment at all times

  • Delivering mail/packages to administrative offices 

  • Conducting other routine operations duties as assigned

Security

  • Controlling access to the facility ensuring only authorized personnel are permitted on site

  • Maintaining in-person surveillance of the site to ensure the perimeter and or buildings remain secure

  • Monitoring CCTV, fire, and security systems

  • Conducting routine patrols and of the property, identifying and noting security risks, safety hazards, and operations issues

  • Completing daily activity reports, incident reports, and other mandated reports per the job assignment and standard operating procedures

  • Coordinators may provide escort details and perimeter fence checks as requested


Positions details

Wages: $15 per hour 

Shifts: part-time shifts 3pm to 11pm

16 to 32 hours per week

Special Events Manager


Historic Richmond Town is seeking a Special Events Manager to design and execute comprehensive, content rich fundraising events that engage current and prospective visitors and support Historic Richmond Town’s fundraising priorities for donor cultivation, stewardship and a major portion of the earned income goal. This includes working with the Director of External Affairs and other team members to plan and execute our major annual fundraiser, the Richmond County Fair.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provides planning, implementation, and logistical management for all aspects of the organization’s seasonal fundraising events, including, but not limited to, The Richmond County Fair, Uncorked! Food & Wine Festival, Tavern Terrace Beer Garden, and Pumpkin Picking at Decker Farm.

  • Oversees administrative aspects of special event creation and implementation, including budget drafting, list and data management, contract negotiation, vendor relations, the creation of functional run-of-show plans, site layouts, timelines, managing ticket pricing and tracking, equipment rental contracts, entertainment schedules, and creating calendars, staff needs and schedules and handbooks for every event.

  • Develops actionable, short and long term strategies to improve and expand the event offerings in accordance with industry best practices and the organization's mission and DEI initiatives.

  • Seeks out new event partnerships and develops creative ways to bolster and diversify community engagement for each event by equitably working with local businesses, artists, and organizations.

  • Works closely with the Director of External Affairs to support event marketing and communications. 

  • Hires, trains and manages a team of part time and seasonal event employees

  • At each event, be on hand to proactively manage any issues with superior customer service and serve as the point person in charge of managing all day-of event logistics, including vendor load in and load out.

  • Coordinates with the Director of External Affairs and Development department regarding event objectives and details in regards to event sponsorship and management of VIP guests.

  • Follows organizational procedure for all income and expense tracking.

  • Collaborates with the Education and Facilities Departments on all issues related to event conception, maintenance, and operation

  • Supports post-event activities: creating and mailing thank you letters, organizing re-cap meetings, surveys, reports, and wrap up materials 


REQUIREMENTS:

  • At least two (2) years of experience in planning, developing, and supervising special events, recreational or educational programs in a community museum, or non-profit setting.

  • Must have very strong organizational, administrative, time management, problem solving and communication skills, and skillful with the unexpected.

  • Must have robust interpersonal skills, with ability to make presentations to senior-level groups as well as to build one-on-one relationships with members of diverse constituencies at all levels of authority.

  • Can demonstrate strong staff management and interpersonal skills, including selecting, training, motivating, and inspiring staff, while holding them accountable for their performance. 

  • Experience creating budgets, schedules, event timelines, and post-event quantitative analysis.

  • Experience engaging and strong interest in working to develop HRT’s relationships with currently underserved populations.

  • Flexible, fun, and collaborative personality.

  • Physical Demands: Must be able to lift up to 30lbs. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to move around the park-like property and in off site locations.   • Must be available to work evenings and weekends as required for all events. 

  • Experience with SquareUp, SimpleTix, Fareharbor, Airtable (or other event management software), and TicketTailor a plus

POSITION DETAILS:

Full Time: $45,000-50,000, commensurate with experience
