Christina,

There are a lot of choices available depending upon what you already have and what you anticipate you need.  I would imagine you already have flat rolling utility carts such as Rubbermaid or the like.  These will work well for larger and flat objects.  I gave away two of these because I could not fit them into my truck after a project - as with any of these carts, a significant cost will be shipment/transportation.  Unless you can find a very local vendor who rents, the shipment costs can quickly exceed buying your own.  You have not specified how many carts you believe you need, so that also may impact alternatives.  Flat utility carts can be purchased almost anywhere, including local big box stores.

Sloped library book carts are harder to find locally.  Here are some alternatives from Amazon that include free Prime shipping.

$119 single sided (3 shelves), 30" long.  This and other dimensions are outside so useful length will be less. https://smile.amazon.com/FixtureDisplays-Metal-Library-Black-Finish/dp/B07LBRWL54/ref=sr_1_17?keywords=book+cart&qid=1563409815&s=gateway&sr=8-17

$236 double sided (6 shelves), 41" long. https://smile.amazon.com/Safco-Products-Double-Sided-5335BL-Slanted/dp/B0035540WQ/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=book+cart&qid=1563410563&s=gateway&sr=8-3

$40 each for 5 used carts on the northwest CT craigslist - look larger than above.  First come, first served. https://nwct.craigslist.org/fuo/d/new-milford-5-library-metal-book-carts/6923783742.html

If you have a good used office furniture store near you, you may get lucky.  I have bought 1000's (literally) of used shelves and standards for a large storage reorganization project at a museum a few years ago.  It probably saved them $20,000 over buying new.  But used is always hit-or-miss, and again, shipping costs can quickly rule out items farther away from you.

You probably have some idea of how many carts you need.  If you are planning on loading one or two, moving them, then unloading and repeating, you would have to spend very little for carts.  On the other hand, if they will be full of library items for a while, you may need a lot of carts.  I believe you will find it is less expensive to buy (you can sell after you have used them if you do not need them and recoup some of the costs) rather than rent, if you can even find a local rental source.

One final thought.  You may wish to check with local libraries to see if they have any they are not using that you could borrow.  Who knows, they may even give them to you.

Subject: [MUSEUM-L] Library move and renovation

Good afternoon!

I would love to hear from anyone who has ever done a Library move/renovation.  We are in the preliminary planning stages and would love any feedback and insight from your own experiences.  We are also looking for resources where we might be able to rent mobile book trucks for a period of time to move books from point A to point B.

Our library consists of about 11k items, including books, magazines, yearbooks, scrapbooks, pamphlets, manuals, hardcover books fiction/non-fiction.  The oldest and most fragile books of our collection are actually boxed individually.  While renovation is taking place, the items will be stored/staged in a temporary location within our Museum.

Feel free to email me directly off list to share any pearls of wisdom.

Thank you in advance!
