Description

The Space Telescope Science Institute, located on the campus of Johns Hopkins University, seeks a Museum Education Specialist for our Office of Public Outreach. Are you passionate about exciting, engaging, and making sometimes complicated content understandable and relevant to diverse audiences? This position will primarily support the NASA’s Universe of Learning science education program, as well as public engagement activities for the Hubble Space Telescope and James Webb Space Telescope.

You will work as a member of a multi-disciplinary team to develop and implement creative and innovative NASA astronomy-themed products, programs, and professional learning experiences for a range of learning environments, audiences, and partners. Do you possess creativity and leadership skills in the field of informal education?

Your major responsibilities will include:

• Developing approaches to use NASA science content to encourage free-choice learning in a variety of environments and contexts;
• Ensuring programming and materials are equitable and support audience needs and NASA education goals;
• Developing and maintaining relationships with museums and other informal learning sites across the nation;
• Working with external evaluators to support program evaluation, including formative and summative efforts;
• Developing accessible materials for diverse audiences at museums, science centers, planetariums, libraries, out-of-school-time programs, youth-serving organizations, and community-based organizations;
• Coordinating with scientists, educators, and others located at partner institutions to create, review, and maintain learning resources and products.

Required Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in museum studies, education, American studies, urban studies, ethnic studies (can be specific to a cultural group), or a related field plus 6 years of program experience OR an advanced degree plus 4 years of program experience
• Experience developing desired learning outcomes and programming designed for audiences in a non-classroom environment
• Experience developing or adapting materials and learning experiences for diverse and far reaching audiences
• Actively demonstrates importance of professional growth in their work and the work of others, in particular with regard to audiences traditionally underrepresented within STEM
• Ability to coordinate and facilitate multi-disciplinary teams and projects involving individuals from different organizations, disciplines and backgrounds.

Desired Qualifications:

• Knowledge of learning theory and application of that theory within museums, science centers, historical houses, zoos, botanical gardens or equivalent informal learning environments
• Experience developing partnerships with audiences and organizations that serve those audiences that are traditionally underrepresented in STEM fields
• Ability to coordinate projects and work with a variety of external organizations
• Experience using emerging technology, informal education research findings, evidence-based practices, and/or assessment techniques to achieve desired learning outcomes
• Experience advocating for accessibility and accountability
