This Photo Research and Permissions Librarian exists to provide access to
the History Colorado collection with a special focus on photographic
formats and to manage the Rights and Reproductions, Permissions, and
Collections Use program. This responsibility includes ensuring
institutional compliance with applicable copyright law and documenting
commercial and nonprofit use of History Colorado (HC) images. The position
will provide reference and research services both onsite and virtually,
work on special projects such as exhibits and processing, and develop and
present occasional classes and workshops for the public. In order to
provide the best possible service to researchers, the general public, and
staff, the position will be familiar with HC resources including
documentary and artifact collections, educational programs, and exhibits.

The History Colorado collection currently comprises approximately 200,000
artifacts, 1,000,000+ photographs, and 8,000+ linear feet of textual and
archival materials.  History Colorado collects in three main areas:
archives, artifacts, and photography.  Please visit historycolorado.org for

*Photo Research and Duplication: *

   - Independently researches the collection in fulfillment of requests
   from both internal and external patrons.
   - Oversee photo order services, including processing orders, negotiating
   contracts, and delivery.
   - Coordinates with and provides backup for Photo Studio, including
   printing and scanning services.
   - Recommends, drafts, and implements revisions to policies and
   procedures.


*Manage Permissions and Collection Use:*

   - Manages Rights and Reproductions permissions regarding use of
   photographs of History Colorado collections.
   - Advise internal patrons on their use of collection-derived images in
   exhibits, programming, and educational activities to insure that HC is in
   compliance with applicable copyright law and any relevant donor agreements.
   - Develop and maintain systems and workflow to document and track use of
   HC images and compliance with copyright and library Use Agreement by all
   users of HC images.
   - Recommend and draft revisions to Library policies and procedures to
   insure they reflect current standards, best practices in the field, and
   changes in copyright law.


*Reference and Reading Room Visitor Support, Education, and Outreach:*

   - Research collections in fulfillment of patron research requests
   including in person, by phone, by mail, online, and fee-based research.
   - Provide courteous customer service including extensive reference desk
   service, registering, and orienting reading room visitors; advising on
   historical research and collection contents; identifying and pulling
   collection materials; and instructing patrons in the use of reference
   indexes, finding aids, and library access machines.
   - Monitor patron use of collections to ensure security of collection
   materials.
   - Collect use statistics for library services, resources and outreach
   programs.
   - Assist with opening and closing the reading room and providing backup
   support for all forms of patron services.
   - Develop and teach workshops on research methods, visual literacy, and
   library services.
   - Assist with HC newsletters, blogs, Colorado *Heritage*, and social
   media vehicles; write content, help locate images, and advise on image use
   permissions.
   - Collaborate with other organizations.
   - May also participate in collections access maintenance projects such
   as indexing and cataloging as well as digital photo projects.
   - May supervise volunteers and interns.

Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal

Master's Degree in Library Science, Archives, History or Museum Studies
plus minimum of 2 years practical experience in a library, museum, special
collections, digital image repository, or archives with strong emphasis on
customer service is required. Experience with U.S. copyright law as
applicable to library and/or museum collections, fair use, and intellectual
property issues is required, as is knowledge of library, archive, and
digitization standards and best practices. Experience with online library
catalogs and library and museum collection databases such as Argus is
highly desirable. Experience with or demonstrated knowledge of historic
photographic formats and processes, and museum standards and collections
handling practices is highly desirable. Knowledge of visual literacy theory
and digital rights management desired.
Supplemental Information


Must be able to work a Tuesday through Saturday schedule.  This position
requires the ability to lift boxes up to 40 lbs from 14' shelves using a
ladder and must be able to climb ladders.  Requires the ability to spend
long periods of time standing and long periods of time sitting.
