Hi Jack,

We’ve used freelancers from Upwork to transcribe audio interviews when budgets were limited. This person did a good job. She didn’t get every individual name right, but I’m sure you know that kind of thing and can fill in the blanks. Her rate is very reasonable and she met the deadlines.

We also use a more expensive service when we need transcription for video because of the need to match “timecode”. Happy to provide the name of that service if you’re interested.

Hope this is helpful,

Robin

Hi All,

I am presently working with a small, non-profit museum in rural Indiana that focuses on the history of the county where we are located. As part of our collection, we have a large number of oral histories that have been recorded with various figures/groups of note in our community. Moving forward, our leadership team has determined that it would be ideal to pursue funding for a professional service transcribe these oral histories so that those transcriptions can be accessioned into our collection.

Given that we are a small museum with approximately 1.5 full-time staff, we lack the experience to properly discern where and what kind of trancription service to utilze. Perusing online, we've learned that the most cost-effective options tend to be AI programs that have charge that start ~10¢ per minute of audio. This does not seem like the best option because it is unclear if these programs have the ability to differentiate between various speakers in the select number of group oral histories (I.e. a panel of retired factory workers) in our collection. Could anyone offer a suggestion for a transcription service that is cost effective but also high-quality enough to differentiate between speakers? In the best circumstance, we would like to spend no more than ~50¢ per minute of audio but, obviously, that must be flexible in order to ensure a high-quality job.

Thanks, in advance,
