The University of Illinois at Chicago invites applications for a faculty position in Museum and Exhibition Studies, to begin August 16, 2018. Appointment will be for one year at the rank of Clinical/Visiting Assistant/Associate/Full Professor (non-tenure track) and is expected to be renewable for a second year.

Duties:

To teach and advise students in UIC’s interdisciplinary, social justice-focused Master’s Program of Museum and Exhibition Studies, we invite applications from scholars who:

1). Have expertise in one or more of the following or related areas: Decolonial, ethnic and indigenous studies; Black, xicana, indigenous, Asian, women of color, and intersectional feminisms; critical race, queer and disability studies; critical museum studies; sociomuseology; critical/inclusive museum/exhibit design; participatory, insurgent, resistant or other justice-centered research and evaluation frameworks and methods; and intertwinings of these knowledge production/praxis fields;

2). Are committed to recent theoretical perspectives and engaged with current debates in the interdisciplinary field of museum and exhibition studies, as they relate to the above areas of scholarship and practice;

3). Have experience teaching and mentoring students who are undocumented, women and African American, Latinx, Asian, Native American, first generation, immigrant, and members of other underrepresented minority groups;

4). Have integrated their areas of expertise into work within museums, galleries and/or cultural centers, and related programs and exhibitions.

In 2016 MUSE launched a new journal of critical cultural work and theory, Fwd: Museums (https://fwdmuseumsjournal.weebly.com/), which is produced by UIC graduate students. MUSE students have presented their work at the Allied Media Conference, Museum Computer Network, the International Council of Museums Committee on Education and Cultural Action and American Alliance of Museums conferences, and the Inclusive Museum Conference; and program graduates have served as: Kress Fellows at the National Museum of Mexican Art, Museum of Modern Art/Studio Museum of Harlem, and Smithsonian Museum of American Art; Collection Manager at Intuit: The Center for Intuitive and Outsider Art; Women's Board Education Fellow at the Art Institute of Chicago; Community Engagement and Programming Coordinator at Rebuild Foundation; Network Architect, National Museum of Health and Medicine; Curator of Public Art, Albright-Knox Art Gallery; Exhibits Specialist, The California Museum; Manager - Special Events, Adler Planetarium; Archives Technician, National Archives (DC); and Contractor (Zoology), Smithsonian Museum of Natural History; and more. 

Qualifications:

The Ph.D. in hand prior to the start of the appointment is required. Faculty members will teach four classes each year (these may include both undergraduate and graduate students), advise graduate students on their capstone project and thesis research and Human Subjects Review processes, and participate in other program activities. This is a full-time position and includes a competitive salary and benefits package.
