STARTING ANNUAL SALARY: $36,300.00

DEADLINE FOR RECEIVING APPLICATIONS:

The Mississippi Department of Archives and History seeks a Historic Resources Specialist III to serve the first Exhibits Specialist of the Museum of Mississippi History. The incumbent will report directly to the MMH Director and collaborate with the Exhibit Section of the Program and Communication Division. The incumbent will serve as the lead project manager for exhibition planning, implementation, and evaluation. The Museum of Mississippi History features an expansive 4,000 sq ft temporary exhibition space and the incumbent will be required to maintain long-term exhibition calendar with a work schedule and production timeline for each exhibition. The incumbent will be expected to regularly work cooperatively as a team with other three other staff members, participating in programs and projects that further the public mission of the museum

Responsibilities will include but are not limited to:

● Cultivating ideas, researching content, selecting artifacts, and designing exhibition concepts based on the MDAH collection and historical research that will engage the museum’s audience and attract new visitors.

● Developing budgets and schedules of completion for the projects.

● Supervising and assisting with design, fabrication, and installation of exhibitions.

● Developing and implementing maintenance plan for core exhibition.

● Selecting and overseeing incoming and outgoing traveling exhibitions

● Planning and implementing regular research and evaluation projects related to museum mission, values and goals.

● Working with three other museum employees, the incumbent will also assist in the day-to-day operations of the museum; staff the reception desk, greet visitors, and perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

● Strong project management skills, the ability to work well in a deadline-driven environment and establish priorities when working on multiple projects.

● Ability to work cooperatively as a team with other staff to further the public mission of the museum

● Working knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite preferred

● Knowledge of tools and techniques for exhibition preparation, shop practices, drawing and the use of planning models and mock ups

● An engaging and welcoming presence when working with museum visitors.

● General understanding and appreciation for Mississippi history

● Passion for the MDAH and MMH mission. Works to exude excellence, integrity, passion and respect in their work. Enjoys working collaboratively in a team.

Education and experience must meet one of the following criteria:

· Master’s Degree from an accredited four-year college or university and one (1) year experience

· Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four-year college or university and two (2) years of related experience

Preference given to degrees in history, southern studies, museum studies, graphic design, communications arts or studio arts and experience in programming, interpretation or visitor services in an academic institution, historical organization, agency or museum.

Willingness and ability to work nights and weekends as needed is an essential function of this position
