POSITION OVERVIEW:

Position Summary:

Under limited direction and indirect supervision, direct the daily operation, maintenance, research and public service activities at the Blackwater Draw National Historic Landmark archaeological site and the Blackwater Draw Museum.
 

REQUIREMENTS:

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Facilitate and encourage research on university collections according to relevant federal, state and ENMU policy
  • Maintain University records and collections
  • Provide researchers and publishers with information about collections
  • Responsible for long-range planning, interpretation, documentation, exhibition, storage and program development for ENMU's archaeological collections and the archaeological site and museum
  • Direct collections management activities to ensure compliance with regulations covering collections management standards and provisions
  • Determine and implement methods for preservation and conservation of items that may include artifacts, art, samples, and/or documentary records and photographs
  • Responsible for the Blackwater Draw Museum and Archaeological Site's long-range fiscal planning, budget management, and grant proposal preparation processes
  • Review proposed activities and events to ensure safe and coordinated operations of the Blackwater Draw Museum and the Blackwater Draw National Historic Landmark archaeological site
  • Supervise Museum staff and student employees
  • Provide instructional support within the Department of Anthropology and Applied Archaeology
  • Perform other related duties as assigned
 
Minimum Job Requirements:
  • A Master's degree in Anthropology or closely-related discipline
  • Minimum of three years' experience supervising archeological field/laboratory/report writing
  • Knowledge of preservation and conservation treatments for archival materials
  • Database management experience is preferred
  • Knowledge of copyright and intellectual property principles is preferred
  • Background in Paleoindian studies on the Southern High Plains is preferred
  • Demonstrated supervisory experience necessary
  • A valid New Mexico Driver's License or the ability to obtain one within 30 days of employment is also required, as well as the ability to safely operate a motor vehicle in all kinds of weather and road conditions
 
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Ability to develop and follow research methodology and protocol
  • Knowledge of basic archeological field and laboratory procedures
  • Knowledge of archeological research issues, principles and procedures
  • Knowledge of federal/state laws, regulations, policies, and procedures for the preservation and management of historic/cultural resources and National Historic Landmarks
  • Ability to supervise and train employees, to include organizing, prioritizing, and scheduling work assignments
  • Knowledge of safe operating procedures, regulations, and standards appropriate to archeological work sites
 

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Physical Demand and Working Conditions:
  • Work is performed both inside and outside during scheduled hours of operations
  • Work is sedentary in nature that at times requires exerting up to 25 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects
