155th Anniversary of Allegheny Observatory: The Very 1st Director
Most people are aware that the famousastronomer, Samuel Pierpont Langley, was the first AlleghenyObservatory Director after the Observatory became the property of theWestern University of Pennsylvania (which was renamed the Universityof Pittsburgh in 1908) in 1867. However beginning in 1864, three years after the opening of theAllegheny Observatory in 1861, another Pittsburgh educator served asthe very first Allegheny Observatory Director: Dr. Philotus Dean.
